Who Should Buy a Water Bottle
Reusable water bottles have many benefits, ranging from money savings and carbon footprint reduction to practicality, convenience, and improved physical health.
First up, making sure you have a readily available supply of water helps you replenish fluids lost through sweat throughout the day and avoid dehydration (which can lead to fatigue, loss of concentration, and headaches, among other ailments). With the common consensus among experts being that adults should drink around 2 liters of water per day, having a portable source of water means we can reach our daily quota by sipping away whenever we feel like it.
Secondly, using a reusable water bottle can save you a lot of money. Depending on where you live, how much water you tend to guzzle, and whether you usually plump for fancier and pricier bottled waters when in the store ahead of generic brands, using a reusable bottle could save you upwards of $100 per month. Impressive, right?
Finally, reusable bottles are a great way to do your part for the environment by cutting down on the waste and pollution caused by single-use plastics, which also, in many cases, happen to contain harmful chemicals such as BPAs, which in recent years has been heavily linked to cancer, diabetes, and several other serious health issues.

Important Features to Consider
A water bottle should do several things well. Here’s what to consider when selecting a water bottle for your daily hydration:
- Bottle type. Most water bottles are made with varying types of one of three materials: plastic, glass, or metals (stainless steel or aluminum). Each material type has a handful of advantages and disadvantages:
- Plastic is the lightest and second most durable material after stainless steel. However, plastic bottles can often leave your water with an unpleasant smell and/or taste, particularly immediately post-purchase and then again after a few months of regular usage.
- Glass bottles are a healthier and safer option than plastic bottles owing to their lack of BPAs and other synthetic substances that might leach into your drinking water. However, they’re also far easier to break and heavier, making them less than ideal for outdoor activities or anyone likely to be treating their bottle to a little bit of rough and tumble during transportation.
- Metal water bottles are by far the most durable and damage-proof of the bunch. Because most metal bottles also use some form of insulation, they’re also usually the best at keeping your drinks cold or hot. On the downside, metal bottles can be much heavier than plastic bottles and recent research has shown that not all models are BPA-free.
- Collapsible water bottles are usually made with lightweight, flexible rubbers or plastics and are a great option for those with limited space in their bag, backpack, or briefcase, or who are simply keen to keep the weight of their bottle to a minimum. As with regular plastic bottles, some collapsible bottles are made with materials that can pose a health hazard and can also prone to leaving your water with a slightly funk taste and smell.
Whichever type of water bottle you choose to buy, always ensure that the bottle is BPA-free, FDA-compliant, and made with food-grade materials.
- Mouth and lid. Screw top, wide-mouth, narrow-mouth, bite-and-suck spout (or straw), or flip-top? As with any feature you may find on a water bottle (or any other product for that matter!), each of these different lid or mouth types has a number of pros and cons.
- Wide-mouth bottles are easier to fill from wild sources (rivers and streams) than other models and much easier to clean. However, they can be tricky to drink out of while on the move without spilling the bottle’s contents.
- Narrow-mouth (or standard-mouth) bottles are easy to drink from while on the move but are harder to clean and, in some cases, can make it more difficult to get a big, satisfying gulp when you’re dying of thirst.
- Flip-top bottles are very convenient because they can be opened with one hand but often lack the security of screw-top bottles. If buying a bottle with a flip-top lid, we recommend making sure the lid also has some kind of lock to prevent it opening accidentally in your bag or backpack.
- Bite-and-suck spouts are ideal for workouts and on-the-move hydration but in most cases lack a secure lid that will prevent the bottle’s contents spilling out in your bag.
- Insulated or not? The main differences between insulated and standard bottles are their ability to retain the temperature of your drinks and weight. While insulated bottles can keep cold liquids cold for around 8-24 hours and hot drinks hot for 4-12 hours, the double-walled design used in these bottle means they usually weigh significantly more than single-walled bottles and have a poorer size-to-capacity ratio. As such, deciding whether portability or the ability to help drinks retain their original temperature is higher on your list of priorities will be the best way to choose between the two options.
That said, insulated bottles carry one other big benefit—namely, they don’t “sweat.” Bottle sweat or condensation on the outside surface of your bottle occurs when air comes into contact with the bottle’s exterior, cools down, condenses, and turns to liquid. Insulated bottles protect against this phenomena by adding an added layer between ambient air and your bottle’s contents. If you plan on carrying your bottle in a bag with other delicate items like papers or electronics, therefore, an insulated bottle is the way to go. - Size and capacity. The capacity of bottles ranges from streamlined, highly portable 12-ounce models to 100-ounce behemoths that will win no prizes for portability but will allow you to equip yourself with enough H20 for a small odyssey or lengthy trek in the desert, never mind an average day at work or session at the gym.
While the size of bottle best suited to your needs will ultimately depend on how much H20 you tend to go through, when buying it’s worth bearing in mind that the size and capacity of your bottle has the biggest impact on the bottle’s portability, meaning that low-capacity bottles will weigh less and take up less room in your bag (but might leave you short on water if you’re a guzzler), whereas larger-capacity bottles will weigh considerably more when full and probably take up most available space in your everyday-carry bag. - Portability. In addition to the weight and dimensions of your bottle, a few other features (or lack of them) will impact upon how easy it is to carry. The most important of these features are extra carry options like carabiners that allow you to clip them to the outside of your bag or backpack, loops that allow you to attach your own carabiner, integrated lanyards, or rubberized and ergonomic grips that make the bottles slip-resistant and easier to hold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are metal water bottles safe?
Stainless steel water bottles were once considered the safest and most sustainable option among the varying types of reusable drinking bottles. Recent studies, however, have revealed that some—but not all—stainless steel bottles can leaching traces of harmful BPAs, which have been linked to fertility problems, male impotence, heart disease, and several other conditions
Aluminum bottles can also present a health hazard, having recently been linked to Alzheimer’s and demonstrated to leach traces of several heavy metals (including nickel, iron, and chromium) into drinks.
Given the above, if buying a steel or aluminum bottle, we highly recommend opting for one that uses only 100% food grade, BPA-free, FDA-compliant materials.
How do you drink out of a water bottle?
This depends on the design of the bottle. With wide-mouthed bottles, simply tip the bottle back far enough to allow the water to flow into your mouth, taking care not to tip the bottle too far and cause a spill. With standard bottles, you can wrap you lips around the bottle opening and chug away without fear of spilling any of the contents. Other bottles use a “bite and suck” nozzle or straw that minimizes the risk of spillage. As the name suggests, with these models simply bite down on the nozzle with your front teeth and suck until your H20 begins to feed into your mouth.
How often should water bottles be washed?
To be perfectly safe, you should clean and disinfect your bottle after every use, even if that means washing it daily (apologies for being the bearer of bad news!). Even if you can’t see bacteria, after all, it doesn’t mean they’re not there… Because bacteria proliferate in moist environments, water bottles are prime real estate for them to settle into and begin breeding.
The best way to wash your water bottle is to use a solution that is one part bicarbonate of soda and one part water. Pour the solution into your bottle, give it a good shake, and then leave it to soak for fifteen minutes. Every few weeks (or ten uses), you can give your bottle a more thorough clean by using a wired brush to scrub the inside of the bottle and/or by mixing half a cup of white vinegar with two cups of water and swilling this around the bottle for a minute.
Alternatively, if your bottle is dishwasher safe, just pop it in the machine after each use and it will remain germ and odor-free!
How long should you keep a water bottle?
The lifespan of any water bottle or the length of time for which it remains safe to use the bottle ultimately depends on the materials with which the bottle is made.
Plastic water bottles can begin to break down after continued use and, in most cases, will need to be replaced about once a year. Stainless steel bottles are usually the most hard-wearing of the bunch and, because they are both rust and stain resistant, most models will only need to be replaced in the event of breakage or if they develop a stubborn odor that remains even after washing. Glass bottles are the most fragile type of the three but, on the plus side, do not degenerate nearly as quickly as plastic bottles, are less likely to harbor germs if cleaned carefully, and could feasibly last you a lifetime if cared for properly.
