Super-helpful for addictions: the natural compound agmatine.

January 10, 2015

I have struggled with an addiction to alcohol most of my life. I have had long periods of abstinence and I've also had relapses. I recently have come across something which is turning out to be life-changing for me: the natural compound agmatine.

I find that when I take 500 mg - 1 g of agmatine on an empty stomach, I do not feel any desire to drink alcohol for the rest of the day.

Agmatine is a natural metabolite of the amino acid arginine.

Agmatine is neuro-protective (protects the brain and nerves), helps prevent seizures, and has antidepressant-like actions. Agmatine is considered to be a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. (see references below).

Agmatine sulfate helps lower blood pressure and has a beneficial effect on nitric oxide production in the body, which enhances cardiovascular health.

My research on Pubmed suggests that agmatine has potential as a valuable agent for the treatment of addiction and neurodegenerative disorders.

Agmatine interacts with the mechanisms of withdrawal syndromes for several addictive substances, including but not limited to alcohol. (see references below)

Agmatine sulfate is considered very safe. Taking too much agmatine (over 6 grams per day) may cause diarrhea. Agmatine is available as a supplement in the U.S., either by itself as a pure powder or as one ingredient in combination with other ingredients in various bodybuilding supplements because of its beneficial effects on nitric oxide levels.

Of course, supplementing with agmatine is only a small part of my daily routine, which as I have written about here, starts with exercise, meditation, and a delicious, nutrient-dense, alkalizing green kefir probiotics drink.
