healingdaily.com is going mobile. An experiment in living with only the basics.

February 20, 2010

Because my ex-wife likes to move our son around so much, (she plans to move our son from Miami to Fort Myers in 3 months), I figure that one of the ways I can ensure my ability to continue seeing my son is to become mobile.

Mobile as in "Living in my van" mobile. "Van dwelling" in Florida.

I intend to soon start living in a van with only the basic necessities. I am attracted to the self-sufficiency of this lifestyle.

I will sleep in my van, wake up in the morning with the rising sun, then I will meditate by the ocean, a quiet park or some other pleasant surroundings.

During the day I will be working using my iPhone and either a WiFi connection or a 3G cellular connection.

My favorite position for working on my iPhone is laying on my back, preferably in a patch of grass.

See undeniable proof of this in the picture on the right.

My diet will continue to be as healthy as it is today, using my Vitamix blender, my favorite stainless steel rice cooker/veggie steamer, my crockpot, and the occasional meal at a healthy restaurant. All of those appliances can be powered using a power inverter connected to the car battery or larger deep-cycle batteries. Later on I can get fancy and install solar panels on the roof of the van to charge my batteries.

Several times throughout the day, I will rebound on my mini-trampoline for a few minutes, outdoors in the fresh air and the sunshine. This has a tremendously beneficial effect on the immune system and on the health of the brain. I will do yoga outdoors.

For showering, I will use either public showers by the beach or showers at the health club. Yes, I will miss my beloved Epson salt baths. Well, those Epsom salt baths will feel even more divine now, each time I decide to take a break from my "Raam Raj Van" and treat myself to a hotel room once in a while! Wawee!

I will be using public bathrooms in places like cafés, Walmart (which incidentally has a nationwide policy allowing overnight parking for RVs), grocery stores, etc. And that's just for #2. Hey did I hear you cringe? Are you aware that 21% of the world's population does not have running water? (1)

Trust me, my life will be filled with luxuries compared to what much of the people populating our planet have at their disposal.

Losing square footage, gaining freedom

In exchange for giving up some square footage, I will be gaining: freedom, a new view to wake up to every day if I choose to, and every month I will pay my rent to my favorite landlord: me. I will be spending more time outdoors, and I will be able to pick up my son regularly and have a picnic with him by the ocean, and meditate with him.

I honestly don't feel that this will be much of a change in my lifestyle. I work "in the cloud" and my income is sent automatically to my bank account electronically.

A simple, uncomplicated, healthy life. Still with way more material conforts than probably half the planet. I'm currently renting a hostel room in South Beach, and so any other town I will be sleeping in will be less noisy.

On rainy days, I will spend the day at an internet cafe and see how other humans live.

I plan to continue growing broccoli sprouts in my van.

All the sprouts need is a little water every 3 hours and some sunshine.

After having read so far down this page, if you think I am CRAZY, wait. This page gets better.

One of the reasons I am choosing to live in a van versus a larger vehicle, is fuel efficiency. One of my goals is to spend the summers in Fairfield, Iowa where I will get to be a part of the Invincible America Assembly once again. The Invincible America Assembly is a group of roughly 2000 meditators who meditate for a total of about 7 hours each day to create waves of positivity and coherence throughout America. Each meditator benefits personally and America benefits.

I spent the entire year of 2008 on the Invincible America Assembly, and was paid over $700 per month for doing nothing more than meditating as part of a large group for seven hours each day. Dr. Howard Settle, a successful oil entrepreneur, spends over $1 million of his own money each month to support this large group of meditators, for America's benefit.

Not a single word on this page was typed by me.

Every word you have read was dictated by me to my iPhone, using the excellent free iPhone app "Dragon Dictation".

While I was bouncing up and down on my mini-trampoline. I am not keen on working at a desk.
