"Doing things" is overrated.June 4, 2009
This weekend, I have a fantastic project for my son and I: we are going to experience "Being happy with less".
My son and I are going to setup our tent in the middle of the woods somewhere in the Jefferson County Trails nearby, and we're going to spend 24 hours DOING NOTHING together in Nature. NO IPHONE. NO BOOKS. NOTHING but the bare essentials needed to survive for 24 hours in the wild. Just meditating, hiking, having father and son talks and sleeping in our tent. Here's what we are bringing:
In the morning, my son and I will plant a stick in the ground and we will observe how the shadow of the stick moves as the earth rotates throughout the day. This idea of going camping with my son and learning to "Be happy with less" is partly a reaction to a statement made by my son's mother (my ex-wife) earlier in the week: she is considering taking the kids out of beautiful, blissful Fairfield Iowa, population 9,000 - about half of whom practice Transcendental Meditation - to move back to South Florida. Why? So she can make more money as a nurse down in South Florida. Nothing like putting your children's happiness and well-being on the back burner for the sake of the almighty Dollar, right? The "strong", "liberated", "independent" career-oriented women in Western culture are one symptom of the impending collapse of the American Empire, a place where we will soon have to build walls along the Mexican border in order to keep Americans from fleeing the country.
Who cares for the children while women are bu$y making all thi$ money?
For the past 18 months, my son and his little sister have had a chance to experience going to Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, where in addition to pursuing a regular curriculum, they get to practice Transcendental Meditation with their classmates, practice yoga asanas, and learn principles of Maharishi's Science of Creative Intelligence. My son's classroom at MSAE has 12 students to a teacher. Every one in the school practices Transcendental Meditation. From the students, to the teachers, to the administrative staff. Therefore, what better idea than my ex-wife's suggestion to remove the children from beautiful Fairfield Iowa, so they can once again experience the joy of overcrowded, stressful South Florida schools, where you can find Police cars parked by the school with lights flashing to remind everyone that they are not in a safe area and where students have to concern themselves with overcrowding and "weapons at school".
Sometimes the "best move" is to DO NOTHING.I believe my son's mother should DO NOTHING, should stay put, continue earning a good living working as a nurse in Iowa and leave the children in their current state of bliss in beautiful Fairfield Iowa. And I look forward to spending 24 hours camping with my son this weekend, DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING other than communing with Mother Nature, meditating and having father and son talks. My son and I, "Being happy with less". I leave you with "Father And Son", by the inimitable Cat Stevens.
